print: 2.75" x4.5" Polaroid b&w

obverse data:

reverse data:
"Left to Right, Fireman Nesbit No 2, Engr. Old Man No 1, Switchmen C. Clark, Earl Isham, Ben Cook"

comments:
Locomotive #1221, which sported a unique paint / decoration combination along with an equally unique air horn (to the right of the smokestack), was the assigned Cahill St. (now Diridon) depot switch engine, or "goat", from the late 1920's to the early 1950's. It was donated in 1960 to the city of Deming, New Mexico, where it still resides. #1221 in 1984 - Wx4.org

In 1947, of 719 switchmen on the Coast Division, Isham had been #1 for at least eight years; Cook was #8 and Clark was #15. Clark retired in 1947. All three may have been pensioners at time of photo, which was shot on 1950 type Polaroid film.

NIC-02 (not in collection)

The photo at right, taken at the same time as #126 - but not part of the Kiesel Collection - mysteriously turned up in the collection of Mary Smalley Lamb of Hagerstown, IN. Ms. Lamb has always lived on her Indiana farm and has no apparent connection to any of these men.

In her own handwriting on the reverse side, she listed the men from left? as (no name) "Earl Isham, Ben Cook and Claude Clark", which does not match with #126, and says, "Do not know engineer [or Fireman Nesbit] all have passed, do not know if engineer is living."
