I don't know what it was about hostlers (Today's hostlers, I don't know.), but they seemed to have a proclivity towards minor disasters born of a variety of preventable human failings - like the classic locomotive-in-the-turntable-pit.

Here we see an unknown guy - but doubtless not the perpetrator - sitting atop Western Pacific #101, which itself resting at a rather awkward angle of repose. The note scribbled on the back of the photo explains things much further than what the actual words say:

What happened to WP 101 when the night shift hostler took the section foreman[']s daughters out for a little ride one quiet evening when nothing was doing on the road. I made this the following morning.

Both Fred Jukes and George Abdill rubber stamped their names on the reverse, but it may have been the former that actually took the shot. Is that Jukes' handwriting? Also: Wendover, maybe? - Courtesy Shasta Division Archives.
