Our two intrepid photographers were particularly fascinated by the hoist house, where equipment was suspended from an overhead crane to allow trucks to be changed out. An elderly steam powered crane - presumably the 199604, a 1907 Industrial Works machine - was kept nearby to facilitate truck replacement. We aren't sure why the shop folks went to the trouble of firing up the crane, when a switch engine could have done the chores more efficiently, but we suspect that use of the latter might have resulted in penalty pay claims. The shop folks probably enjoyed playing with the old girl, anyhow. You can find photos of the 199604 in action on pp. 153-154 of Valley Division Vignettes (see Part 1 for book info).
