Located next to the San Francisco roundhouse of the same name, Mission Bay Garden was maintained by locomotive engineers during their idle moments. For reasons uncertain, it was renamed in honor of Charlie Mathews, perhaps at the time of his retirement. The Garden Club, an informal engineer beneficial group, survived at least through Amtrak's tenure on the Peninsula, although the garden itself was demolished with the roundhouse in 1960.

"Arthur Cohen", "3-3-56"

description:
Cohen did not appear in the engineer seniority roster of 12-31-56, which suggests that this was a "last run" photo. He was promoted to engineer on 8-31-1910, which likely means that he performed about 50 years of service. He was #1 in seniority at the time, with the #2 man, A. E. Rudell, 13 years his junior.

date: ca. 1962

location: Pacific Grove?

photographer:

print: 5" x 7" portrait b&w

obverse data:

reverse data:

comments:
The presence of Proudfit and (presumably) Heyden's wife indicates this is a last run photo, possibly taken after the arrival of #78, the Del Monte at Pacific Grove (see 029, 032). The person on the left is unknown.
Heyden established his fireman seniority the same day as his eventual opposite on the Del Monte, C. H. Malone, who was one number junior (031, below). Malone retired in March, 1962, so it is conceivable that Heyden retired at about the same time.
