V.I.N. plates and the Evolution of the Willys Wagon and Delivery chart are well and good for detailed identification, but let's say that you are new to Wagondom(tm) and merely want a general visual reference of yearly differences. Well, here you are:




July 1946 through March 1950
Station Wagon

Key identifying feature: Flat-faced grill.

Notes: 4 cyl. engine; 6 cyl. option starting in 1947; 4x4 not offered until 1949, but only with 4 cyl.; 2 piece tailgate hinged at top and bottom
Sedan Delivery

Key identifying feature: Flat-faced grill

Notes: 4 cyl. engine; introduced 1947; 2x4 only; side-hinged rear doors




April 1950 to 1953
Station Wagon

Key identifying features: "V" shaped (pointed) grill with five horizontal bars; 1951 & later have wrap around rear bumpers; 1950-51 models have single, license plate mounted tail light; 1952 & later models have two flush-mounted tail lights on either side of tailgate and chrome strips on side of hood & cowl; 1953 & later models have three-winged hood ornament

Notes: 1950-51 models have foot-start ignition; 1952 & later models have key start ignition; 6 cyl. engine in 2x4 models only


Sedan Delivery

Key identifying features: "V" shaped grill; single tail light; Deliveries never received wrap-around rear bumpers; Post Office 2x4's have right hand drive

Notes: 4x4 models first produced in 1953; 1952 & later models have inside door handle, rather than earlier push button.

1953 Station Wagon



1954-1955
Station/Utility Wagon

Key identifying features: Grill has three evenly-spaced horizontal bars; 2x4 models through early 1955 have Planar (transverse leaf) front suspension; later 1955 2x4 models have I-beam front suspension;

Notes: 6cyl. 4x4 first produced in 1954, had L head engine; 6 cyl 2x4 models had Kaiser OHV engine; Station Wagon became Utility Wagon in 1955, although Kaiser still marketed an upscale "Deluxe Station Wagon"

Sedan/Utility Delivery

Key identifying features: Same as Wagon, except no trim strip or winged hood ornament; Post office 2x4's have right hand drive; wrap -around rear bumpers introduced in 1954, I think.




1956-early 1959
Utility Wagon

Key identifying features: Center horizontal grill bar offset towards top; chrome (stainless) trim strip extended to rear of sides;1957 & later have 4" screened hole on grill for heater intake; mid-1957 & later have 12 volt electrical system

Note: The term "Deluxe Station Wagon" referred to the ad picture at right.

Utility Delivery

Key identifying features: Same as Wagon, except no trim strip or winged hood ornament

Note: I-beam suspension



Late 1959-1965
1959 4x4 Utility Wagon
1962 4x4 Utility Wagon
1958-64 Maverick Special Station Wagon

The Maverick Special was named after the Maverick TV series and Kaiser heavily advertised on the show. For more info on this interesting model, see Mike Boyink's What is a Maverick?, and Derek Redmond's Willys Goes to Hollywood.

Key identifying features: No spare tire (!); only 2wd with chevron (a.k.a. hockey stick) side trim, which became standard on 4x4 models in 1959 or 1960; 4 cylinder engine

Note: Kaiser called the Mavericks "Station Wagons"
