Ryegate Montana, August, 1974
Milwaukee Road train order station
Milwaukee Road
Milwaukee Road's Rygate office was located a few miles west of the Great Northern crossing at Slayton. The burg that day was memorable for two things. First, there was the ancient 40 ton stock car that was still being used for its original intended purpose - notice the hay inside the car in the bottom photo. By this late date, most railroad's few remaining stock cars carried anything but animals. Second, Rygate has found a place in Wx4 lore as the site of the world's worst drinking (sulfer) water. How the locals could stand the stuff was beyond us.
